Visit to Martin in Black Forest - April 2000

Clicking on the small pictures will open a large version in a new window.

Schwarzwald I went to stay with my friend Martin in Freiburg. I've taken so many photos of Freiburg before, that there really aren't any here this time. This however is typical of the Schwarzwald, near Hinterzarten. We took the train to Hinterzarten, walked to Hinterwaldkopf for lunch, then on to Kirchzarten for the train back.
Breisach Breisach is west of Freiburg on the border with France and has this "street sculpture", which you can push around to your heart's content, but not very easily walk away with.
Meersburg I took myself off for a few days' stay in Konstanz on the Bodensee (Lake Constance). Konstanz is charming (and twinned with Richmond) but, again, I've taken plenty of photos before. This is Meersburg, also on the Bodensee taken from the boat on its way to ...
Mainau Peacock Peacock of flowers
Mainau, or Bluhmeninsel, one of the islands in the Bodensee, which has almost tropical gardens and floral sculptures.
Schaffhausen An attractive window in Schaffhausen, on the way from Freiburg to Konstanz, but in fact in Switzerland, a little bit that pokes into Germany.
Staufen Staufen berg Ruins on Staufenberg
The town of Staufen, south of Freiburg, was where the historical magician Doktor Faust lived. Visible from all over the town is the Staufenberg, with its ruined castle.
Ponts couverts Strasbourg La Petite France Cathedral
This time just over the Rhein in France, with the ponts couverts and la Petite France, charmingly set amidst the branches of the divided river, and the imposing cathedral.
Basel Rathaus Yet another country - Switzerland - and the decorated Rathaus in Basel.
