Valetta

Valetta is the capital of Malta. You can see the Anglican and Roman Catholic (with the dome) Cathedrals. This interactive map is great fun.

Grand Harbour

The Grand Harbour really was this colour.

Watch tower

The decorations on these watch towers show that they are the eyes and ears of the island.

Maltese Bus

Getting around Malta is easy with the regular and cheap bus service ...

bus3_s

... and it's an anorak's delight, as the buses represent all decades from the 30s to the 70s.

In the bus

You can feel safe in the bus, because most have their own religious shrine.

Madonna

The illuminated Madonna is looking after you on the street as well.

Hagar Qim

A religion with a rather longer pedigree (3000-2500BC) is evident at the Hagar Qim Temple, in the South of the island. 'Hagar Qim' means 'erect stones'.

Mdina

Mdina is Malta's mediaeval capital, in the centre of the island.

Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk is a charming fishing village in the South East, which has also developed into quite a large port.

Azure Window

On Gozo, a smaller island to the North West is this stunning Azure Window ...

Cactus

... an example of the wonderful, saturated colours that punctuate the rather dusty soil of the islands.
